

Born in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Barbara Spencer and Dr. W.B. Lyles, Jr. After graduating from Spartanburg High School, he received his B.S. in Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1972. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Navy from 1972-75 as a Personnel Administrator and Communications Manager and Official. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal for his service.
Bill’s engineering career was both varied and challenging, beginning at Milliken & Co. Research Corp. He also worked with Lockwood-Greene Engineers Inc. in Spartanburg for over two decades, and completed his engineering career with FLUOR. He was passionate about cycling (completing 21 Assaults on Mount Mitchell), enjoyed running with the Greenville Track Club, boating and water sports, and playing the guitar.
He was a member of Christ Church Episcopal and joyfully participated in its many services as an usher. Known for his generous disposition, he was devoted to volunteering for Meals on Wheels.
In addition to his loving wife of 44 years, Christine Knight Lyles, he is survived by his son, William Fleming Lyles; his sister-in-laws, Emily Knight of Atlanta, Claire Knight Blake, and her spouse, Joseph J. Blake Jr.; nephew, J. Brian Blake of Bethesda, MD; and, niece, Elizabeth Blake Dudek (Ben) of Columbia.
