A life-long resident of Greenville, Tommy was employed by Bell South from 1970 until his retirement in 2002.
Tommy was also co-owner of Health Force Healthcare Services, and became more involved in the business after his retirement from Bell South. Tommy was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
Tommy loved baseball. He coached little league baseball when his boys were growing up, and umpired little league and high school baseball for many years. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play baseball, as well as watching his nephew, David Christy play at Limestone College. He and his wife attended a major league baseball game in every city they visited. One of Tommy’s proudest moments was taking his grandsons to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Tommy spent the last day of his life doing exactly what he enjoyed most…being at the lake. He spent all day Saturday taking his grandchildren on boat rides, teaching them how to drive the Jet Ski, and pulling them on the “Hotdog” around the lake. Tommy loved his lake house and was happiest when he was there working on projects, maintaining the landscape, and socializing with the neighbors.
Tommy was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, friends and family. There wasn’t much he couldn’t repair. The family would kid him about having a tool to “fix” anything. Also, Tommy enjoyed the monthly luncheons with his Parker High buddies. He looked forward to reminiscing and seeing old friends. He was always ready to play a round of golf anytime his friends called.
Tommy is survived by his parents; his wife, Cathy Fowler Christy, his two precious sons and daughters-in law, Capt. Brad and Rebecca Christy, and Adam and Carrie Christy.
Other survivors include his brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and Julianna Christy; Tim and Kathi Christy; Mark and Janet Christy. Tommy cherished his 8 grandchildren Alex Holmes, Katelyn Holmes, Brandon Christy, Catherine Armstrong, Bryson Christy, Bradyn Christy, Caroline Christy, and Hannah Christy.
Tommy is also survived by his godchildren, Morgan Christy Willingham and David Christy, many nieces and nephews that he was so proud of and a special little one, Emmaline Armstrong.
It saddened Tommy that his granddaughter and so many others suffered with Type 1 diabetes. He had hoped a cure would be found in his lifetime. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Tommy’s memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), 37 Villa Road, Greenville, SC, 29615.
A service to Celebrate his life will be Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at 6:00pm at The Mackey Mortuary with the Reverend Ronnie Williams officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4:00pm to 5:45pm at the mortuary.
