Sushma Raj Anand

Sushma was born to Mr. and Mrs. P.R. Ahuja on August 21, 1935 in Lahore, India. The family moved to Bhagalpur, Bihar where she lived until her marriage to Dr. Satish (Sam) C. Anand in 1958. The couple moved to Raleigh, NC., where Sushma became actively involved in the social circle of the city and was made honorary member of the Raleigh Jr. Women’s Club. From 1959 to 1962, she lived in Madison, Wisconsin where her husband was completing graduate studies and where her first son was born. The family moved to Ludhiana, India in 1964 then returned to the U.S. in 1974. During those 10 years she dedicated her life to raising 3 lovely children.

Once in the U.S, Sushma decided to return to college while living in N.C. and joined the Pembroke State University where she graduated Magna cum laude with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. After teaching for a year in Laurinburg, NC, Sushma and her family moved to Sikeston, MO. She joined the New Madrid School System and taught there from 1979 to 1994. The family then moved to Columbia, MO. in 1998 and then to Greenville, SC., in 2014.

Sushma is survived by her husband, Dr. Satish (Sam) Anand, son, Jay Anand Kumar of Lynchburg, VA, and his wife Christa Renu; daughter Alka Anne Anand of Greenville, SC., and son Dr. Sanjay K. Anand of Asheville, NC., and his wife Laurie. Grand children include Nicole, Christian Josh and Jodi. Sushma was preceded in death by her parents and sister Sudesh Bahri of Patna, India.

Sushma was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia and Shanti Mandir (Hindu Temple). She was very active in the writing, collating and knitting groups of her church. Sushma was also an active member of Fort-nightly Club, movie and TV groups of the University’s Women’s Retiree Club. She also served the community in “Meals On Wheels” program.

Friends, family and the public are invited to a Visitation time beginning at 1PM on Aug. 13th, followed by a memorial service at 2PM both at Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC. 29607.
