Roger was born and raised in Superior Wisconsin, the son of Earl and Beatrice Vesterby. He attended high school there where he met and married his high school sweetheart Madeline. They were married for 59 years.
Roger enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an aviator aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Ranger (CV-61), including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He continued with the Navy as a flight instructor with his final station at the Los Alamitos Air Station in California. While in the Navy, Roger obtained his degree from San Jose State University in California and after retirement he enjoyed a second career working for the Nestle company in Salinas, California.
Roger is preceded in death by his wife, parents and brothers Tom and Paul. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth, son Gregory, wife Barbara and granddaughter Jasmine, daughter Renee, husband Michael and grandchildren Dylan and Taylor as well as his beloved French Bulldog Emmett.
He was an animal lover and they were drawn to him. He was an avid model train enthusiast building cities, mountains & lakes for his trains to travel through. He loved gardening with orchids being his specialty. He loved sailing and was a member of the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club and served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
He was a wonderful husband and father and will be missed by all.
A funeral service for Roger will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023 beginning at 2:00 PM with a burial to follow at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609.
