Roger moved to Anderson in 1954 where he attended Boys High playing football, basketball, and track. He was an outstanding athlete. He played in the Shrine Bowl, played with the All South team and the All State team and received a football scholarship to the University of South Carolina. He established the Roger W. Chastain-Mt. Vernon Scholarship Endowment to the University Of South Carolina Darla Moore School Of Business. He was a former board member of the USC Business Partnership Foundation. Roger was the former President and CEO of Riegel Textiles and retired in 2008 as President and CEO of Mt. Vernon Mills. Prior to his retirement he served as President of the American Textile Manufacturer’s Institute and was a Past President and Board Member Emeritus of the South Carolina Manufacturer’s Association.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 53 years, Sarah (Bunny) Goff Chastain, are a daughter Molly Boehmer (Judson) of Greenville; two sons, Jason (Alex) Chastain of Greenville, and Brent (Tracey) Chastain of Columbia, and his brother Ronald L. Chastain (Sara) of Greenville. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Jordan, Alexander, and Hayden Boehmer and Tanner, Hudson, London, Harper, and Ridge Chastain. He was predeceased by two infant children.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11am at First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, with a reception immediately following the service in the church parlor. Private burial will be in the Mt. Elon Baptist Church Family Cemetery, Hopkins, SC.
