He was born in Greenville, SC to the late Lester Brown and Ruby Dixie Brown. He was a graduate of Greenville High School and later attended Clemson University. Robert served in the US Army during World War II. In combat his plane was shot down in Germany and he was taken hostage as a prisoner of war.
After coming home, he married the love of his life, Doris Collins of Piedmont, SC in 1948 and had two daughters. Robert was a self-made man and all his life was involved in various retail businesses. His passion for playing basketball at the YMCA and Clemson football drove him to open the University Shoppe on East North Street. In his early years Robert was a successful insurance agent in the Greenville area, opening his own agency. Anyone who knew Robert knew that he was a dedicated animal lover. He showed kindness to everyone he came in contact with and never met a stranger. He was the light of our life’s.
Robert is survived by his wife of 69 years, Doris Brown; two daughters: Dianne Taylor and Phyllis Threatt and husband Sonny; four grandchildren: Brantley Threatt Golford and husband David, Elizabeth Threatt, Elliott Taylor and Molly Taylor.He was predeceased by two brothers: Jones “Bill” Brown and Clyde Brown and one sister Lillian Mitchell.
Visitation will be held Sunday, June 18, 2017 from 6 – 8 pm at Mackey Mortuary, Greenville, SC.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Mackey Mortuary chapel, on Monday, June 19, 2017 at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society Greenville at Furman Hall Road.
