Greenville - Patricia (Patti) H. McCarter passed away peacefully at home on November 13, 2018 at the age of 81. She was the daughter of the late James Landrum Hood Sr. and Sue Talley Hood. She was predeceased by her brothers J. Harold Hood, J. Rush Hood and James L Hood Jr. and her sister Edna Hood Meadors.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years James T. McCarter, three sons: Steven T McCarter (Gwen), Bruce H. McCarter and David C. McCarter (Megan), six grandchildren: Thomas McCarter, Lawson McCarter, Abigail McCarter, Patrick McCarter, Emily McCarter and Anderson McCarter, and by her beloved cat Dusty. She was affectionally known by her grandchildren as "MaMa".
Patti is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Norman and Gayle McCarter and Mike & Nelda Kay along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by nephews James L. Hood III and Todd Norman McCarter.
She was a 1955 graduate of Greenville High School where she played the leading role in her Senior Class play. Patti was a 1959 graduate of Furman University where she was a member of the Furman Singers. After graduating from Furman as music major, she taught choral music at Greenville Junior High School. She was minister of music at her home church, Augusta Road Baptist Church, for 32 years. There she led both the adult choir and the youth choirs. There was a large group of teenagers who participated in the youth choirs at Augusta Road Baptist Church during her years as Minister of Music. She enjoyed taking them on trips to perform at different places around the state.
Patti enjoyed writing and wrote a novel The Great House is Gone which was about the Gullah People who lived along the coast of South Carolina. She enjoyed visiting the coast to do research on the Gullah People on which her novel was based.
One of Patti's favorite past times was playing bridge. She enjoyed many hours with her friends socializing and playing in numerous bridge clubs.
She taught a ladies Bible study group in her home and an adult Sunday School class at Augusta Road Baptist Church. Her lessons for both the ladies Bible study group and the Sunday School class were written by her and were based on a chronological order of events in the Bible.
The family would like to extend gratitude to Home Instead Care Givers and Homestead Hospice for the compassionate care given her.
The family will be at the home of David and Megan McCarter, 303 Sweetbriar Road, Greenville, SC 29615.
There will be a private burial at White Oak Baptist Church cemetery. A memorial service is planned at 3:00 PM on Friday, November 16, 2018 at Augusta Road Baptist Church with visitation to follow the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Augusta Road Baptist Church, 1823 Augusta Road, Greenville, SC 29605, or to a charity of one's choice.
