For those that knew Mike, knew his larger-than-life personality. His big smile, bear hugs, and loud laugh always filled the room; but nothing compared to his huge heart. He was a lover of life… and his life was his family and friends. When we think of Mike, we think of him sitting on the back of the boat with a fishing rod in hand; or climbing in to pilot the plane for yet another flight; or simply sitting at home, sharing a glass of wine with his love and a "grand" snuggled up in his lap. A perfect day for Bubba was near the water, listening to beach music, grilling a big steak, and laughing with his family. He made those ordinary moments the ones that are our profound memories that fill our hearts today.
Mike is survived by his wife and best friend, Linda Bryant Barnes; his mother Janie Tuttle Barnes of Greensboro, NC; his son and only child, William Michael "Billy" Barnes (Jennifer), granddaughters Jordyn and Janie, step grandsons Terry and Jacob; his brother Keith Barnes (Donna); his sister Rebecca Coble (Jimmy) nieces and nephews his stepson Scott Elmore (Candace), his step grandchildren, Peyton, Parker and Jefferson Elmore; and Bo and Raleigh Felton. He is preceded in death by his father, M.H. "Bill" Barnes and his step daughter, Pam Elmore.
Mike was born in Asheboro, North Carolina and attended Asheboro High school. He went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. He loved to travel and lived in many places across the south and ended up calling Greer, South Carolina home for the past 40+ years.
Thank you for those who have reached out and want to do something to honor Mike. Well, you all know that he wasn't into flowers and such so if you want to honor him, do something nice for someone else and tell them it is from "Bubba", or donate to your favorite charity, or support the team that helped Mike over the past few months - Providence Care (Piedmont).
Mike always enjoyed good times with his friends and family and would want us to celebrate his life in the same manner. We will have a casual celebration on Friday, December 8. Please join the family at 6pm at Mackey Mortuary for some good beach music and a look back at the life of an incredible and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend… our Bubba.
Condolences may be may at www.mackeymortuary.com
