A native of Willoughby, Ohio, Melva came to Greenville to attend Bob Jones University, graduating with a B.S. degree in 1950. Returning home, she earned a Master of Science in Education degree from Case Western Reserve University, and for a number of years she taught elementary school and served as principal in schools in northern Ohio. During that time, she also faithfully served in many capacities at First Baptist Church, Willowick, Ohio (Sunday School teacher, choir director, youth group sponsor, singing both in the church services and on the church's radio broadcasts).
In 1970, she was invited to become the first principal of Bob Jones Elementary School. Starting with a handful of children and a couple of grades, she built the school into a model institution. For her achievements in the field of education, Melva was awarded the Order of the Palmetto and was listed several times in Who's Who Among Educators in the United States. Her emphasis upon high standards of excellence was balanced by her genuine love for her "children" and concern for both their spiritual and academic advancement. She prayed for each child individually, even when the numbers increased. She consistently demonstrated generous and loving concern to her colleagues and others. She continued to exercise her musical abilities by singing in the University Concert Chorale and summertime church choirs.
Throughout her lifetime she provided financial support to many missionaries and other Christian ministries.
Melva was a member of Faith Free Presbyterian Church. Special thanks to the staff of Shepherd's Care Center of Greenville for their excellent care of Melva during her last few years.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2024 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations, 311 Century Dr. Greenville, SC 29607.
