On June 27, 2023, Mary Francis Garrison Snipes (aka Cookie) was reunited with her loving Husband Albert Edgar Snipes, Father Thomas Odell Garrison, Mother Fannie Whitfield Garrison and Little Sister Edith Garrison Brown, along with countless other loved ones from a life well-lived. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Viki Capps and Sheri Summey, and son-in-law Buddy Summey. Mary’s grandchildren, Adam Whitfield Capps, Jessica Summey Williams, and Molly Summey Smith and husband Eric Smith, adored their “Nannie,” as did great granddaughters, Elsey, Sadey and Bonnie Smith.
Mary was born in Commerce, Georgia on October 30, 1927. Mary’s father died in an accident when she was five years old, and only three days after her sister’s birth. She fiercely loved all her relatives, who helped care for her and her sister until their mother could secure employment. It was a time when opportunities for women were limited, but the little family had a home filled with laughter and love, if not material possessions. Mary helped manage their small household even as a young child, and was always employed during her teenage years, while attending Greenville High School. Cookie married Albert when she was nineteen, and retired from AT&T when she was 55. Her last position there was never previously held by a woman. Union officials intervened, so that Cookie would not be denied the job. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher at Rocky Creek Baptist Church, and dedicated herself to many aspects of the church community. Her entire life was a reflection of her love for Christ. Cookie blessed everyone she touched with a merry spirit, and a kind and loving heart, earning a second nickname, “Sunshine.” In recent years, Cookie’s humility, gratitude and endless supply of smiles won her the love and affection of all her wonderful caregivers, which she returned in full measure. The family will be forever grateful to those angels of mercy.
Burial will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 12th, at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Dr. Greenville, SC 29609. At 11:30 am, a memorial service will follow at Rocky Creek Baptist Church 1801 Woodruff Road, Greenville, SC 29607.
