Saturday, April 6,2024. Born on September 24,1929, in Ware Place, SC he was the son of the late Rufus Charles and Sudie Bell Eskew. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann Williamson Eskew.
Marvin is survived by his daughter, Diane Eskew and husband, Richard A. Rice, of Greenville, SC. Also surviving their “Papa” are his grandsons, Gregory A. Rice and his wife, Layne, and Matthew C. Rice. He was also the proud great-grandfather to Luke A. Rice, Harper L. Rice, Knox G. Rice, Charles F. Rice. He was predeceased by one sister, Sadie Eskew McMeekin and husband, Guice “Mac” A. McMeekin. He was known as “Uncle Marvin” to many nieces and nephews. Marvin was known for his love of family. He was a quiet, gentle, and patient man known for his easy-going nature. According to one of his nephews, “Uncle Marvin was the best listener, a man of few words,always willing to help, loved to cook, never required to be the center of attention, but did things well. Color nor religion never made a difference to him, he saw people for what mattered most; their character.” He was a “what you see is what you get kind of man.”
He was a graduate of Ellen Woodside High School where he played basketball. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War Era and was a member of the Wade Hampton American Legion.
He retired from John D. Hollingsworth on Wheels, Inc. at 80 years old after 48 years of service. Besides his dedication to his work, Marvin loved to work in his garage and take long rides around the Greenville area including “the country” where he was born and raised. Marvin was a long-time member of White Oak Baptist Church in Greenville, SC and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
A visitation for Marvin will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, Open Arms Hospice, or the Greenville Cancer Society.
The family would like to thank Caroline Ashmore of Interim Healthcare for her years of love and care. We also would like to thank Open Arms Hospice and the staff at the McCall Hospice House for their compassionate and committed care. Their support during the last weeks has been a blessing.
