Marilyn Delores Brown Smith, 92, of Greenville, South Carolina went home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, October 25, 2023. She was born April 9, 1931, in Xenia, Ohio, to parents Clarence C. and Selina Lucile (Renick) Brown. She is preceded in death by her sister Miriam Simpson.
Marilyn is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Philip D. Smith; daughter Carolyn (Danny) Graybeal of Easley; sons Dan (Jenny) Smith and Stan (Sharon) Smith of Greenville; six grandchildren: Adelle (Travis) Graham of Fountain Inn, Kara (Shawn) Byers of Portland, Oregon, Gabrielle (Brad) Miller of Charleston, South Carolina, and Madison, Macy, and Hudson Smith of Greenville; and a great grandchild, Haven Graham. She is also survived by brothers Glenn (Gladys) Brown of San Diego, California, and Melvin Brown of Birmingham, Alabama.
Marilyn graduated from Stivers High School, Dayton, Ohio, in 1949. She has lived in Greenville 67 years. She helped support her husband through advanced degrees while also starting a young family. She supervised student workers at Bob Jones University’s Barge Hospital where she served faithfully for 43 years — the hospital’s longest serving staff member. For her faithful service and support of her husband in fulfilling his administrative duties at BJU, including attendance at university programs, the Alumni Association honored her with membership in March 1989. After her retirement she became an active member of the University Park Garden Club and served as their treasurer for 14 years. She was honored as the outstanding member of the year in 2009-2010. She traveled with her husband to all 50 states and over 40 countries. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.
Marilyn was a loving wife who prayed faithfully for her family. She enjoyed church, crafting, crocheting, the outdoors, traveling, and her family—especially her grandchildren who affectionately called her “Moe,” “Moie,” or “Mee-maw,” and her great grandchild who called her “Granny Smith.”
A family burial will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville on Tuesday, October 31. The family will receive loved ones and friends on Wednesday, November 1 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Morningside Baptist Church, 1115 Pelham Road, Greenville. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Smith Family Scholarship for the education of nursing and teacher education students at Bob Jones University, 1700 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC 29614.
