Lily was born March 15, 1933 in Anderson, South Carolina, to Flavel “Knox” Altman Sr. and Daisy (Highfill) Altman. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy Paul Mullinax I; son, Richard (Marion) Mullinax; brother, James “Jim” Altman; and sisters, Bonnie Sue (James “Ed”) Ellard and Linda (Rod) Taylor.
She is survived by daughters Nancy (Rodney) Stamper and Julie (Richard) Crawford; grandsons Gregory (Amanda) Stamper, Roy “Paul” Mullinax II, and James Ross “Jimmy” Mullinax; great-granddaughter Emma Sue Stamper; brothers, Flavel “Knox” Altman Jr. and John Altman; sister, Daisy “Christine” (Newton) Lee, and several nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Falls Church High School in Falls Church, Virginia, she went to Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina where she met her husband, Roy, and graduated in 1956. She began her teaching career in Fairfax County, Virginia. She later taught preschool, including music classes, at the Columbia Baptist Child Development Center in Falls Church, Virginia.
Lily was a faithful member of Columbia Baptist Church for many years. Her ministries there included singing in the choir and writing and acting in dramas. In 1991 she and Roy went on a mission trip to Russia with a group from the church. In 2007 she and Roy moved to Newton, Kansas, where they were residents of Newton Presbyterian Manor and members of the Senior Players, a reading theatre group. After Roy’s death in 2016 Lily became a resident of Spring Arbor of Wilson, where she made new friends. She became a member of New Hope Missionary Church.
As a lifelong learner and supporter of the arts, Lily especially enjoyed travel, reading, genealogical research, history, concerts, theatre, and floral crafts. Her greatest joy came from nurturing the youngest members of her family and friends.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Spring Arbor of Wilson, Wilson Medical Center, and Hospice of Wilson for their dedication and kindness during the last days of Lily’s life.
A celebration of Lily’s life will take place Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn, 1 Pine Knoll Dr. Greenville, South Carolina 29609. Services begin at noon followed by burial.
