Born in Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Douglas Dumon and Ruth Loula Wilson.
After serving in the United States Army, John graduated from Clemson University with a degree in industrial engineering. He then made his career in textiles with J.P. Stevens and Company, which later became West Point Pepperell, Inc. He was a long-time and active member of Edwards Road Baptist Church where he served as a leader, teacher, and usher. In his later years, he enjoyed volunteering with the Good News Club as a counselor, distributing food at the Eastside Center of East Park Baptist Church, and ringing the bell at Christmas for the Salvation Army.
Despite his journey through dementia, John never forgot his love for Clemson and cheering on the Tigers every football season.
John was predeceased by his wife Virginia. Surviving are two daughters, Jenni Young (Cole) and Jean Harris (Wally); seven grandchildren, Baileigh Tolleson, Lauren Wagoner, Katie Stanford, Taylor Harris, Coleman Young, Jenna West, and Graham Harris; twelve great- grandchildren; brother, Jerome Wilson, and niece, Elizabeth Wilson. Upon thinking about family, he would often say, "I don't know why the good LORD chose to bless me so!"
A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery in Blacksburg, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Edwards Road Baptist Church of Greenville, Child Evangelism Fellowship of Greenville, or The Salvation Army.
