Beloved by his family and friends, John was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and a member of the Kendrick Sunday School Class at Greenville First Baptist Church. His determination to live as a servant of God during his last years was evidenced by his compassion and devotion as both a Stephen Minister and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, on August 8, 1935, John was the son of James and Leola Zana Hawkins Macrae and spent his youth in Staten Island, NY. John attended Curtis High School and was a member of the Princeton University class of 1957. Upon graduation, he received his commission in the United States Navy where he served as an officer.
In 1961, John accepted a position with Celanese Plastics Company and moved to Taylors, South Carolina, where he played a key role in the construction and startup of the Greer plant, later American Hoechst. He was strategic planning manager at the time of his retirement in 1995.
John especially enjoyed friends and fellowship with the Golden Boys of Pebble Creek Club, Music Club, and the SC chapter of the Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network and was committed to educating and increasing awareness of this type of cancer. He was also past president of the Tri-state Regional Council of Parents Without Partners, where he met his wife.
John is survived by his wife Karen her son Alan Sepsi; his son John Scot Macrae, wife Jenny and their children, Andrew and William of Atlanta, GA; his daughter Mary Anne McLendon, husband Jack and their two sons, John and Davis of Greenville; his brother James Macrae, Jr., wife Diane and their son James Macrae, III, his wife and children; and Vivian Morrison and her daughter. He was predeceased by his cousin Andrew Morrison.
The family will receive visitors the evening of October 20th from 6:30 until 8:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home at 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC. A memorial service for John will take place this Friday, October 21st, at Westminster Presbyterian Church of Greenville at 1:00 pm with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
