John graduated from Travelers Rest High School in 1976 and went on to study graphic design at Bob Jones University. His professional career took him to the Greenville Downtown Airport, where he was employed for 30 years. He retired as the Director of Maintenance in 2016 due to disability from a serious illness. John’s creativity did not stop with full-time employment. He was a talented artist who did several commissioned pieces. He loved the night sky and woodworking. His woodworking showed a meticulous attention to detail and usefulness. His paintings were so real customers often thought he had framed photographs.
John is survived by his wife, Martha (Lennon) Long; his children Curtis Long (wife Amanda Long) and Sara Johnson (husband Jeremiah Johnson); his mother, Betty H. Long of Travelers Rest, SC; his brother, Dennis M. Long of Fountain Inn, SC and sister, Julie M. Long of Marietta, SC. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren: Evan Long, Erin Long, Emma Long, Emily Long, Harrison Johnson, Lillian Johnson, and Carly Johnson. John was predeceased by his father, Johnny Ray Long.
A visitation for John will be held in Remembrance Chapel in Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1901 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC, on Monday December 23, 2024 at 10:00 AM with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM. The committal service will be held in the park at 12:00 PM.
