A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he had a long career in law enforcement, starting with the Federal Bureau of Investigation before serving more than 30 years as a police officer for the Greenville City Police Department. He married the love of his life, the late Margaret Rogers Campbell, in 1956, and they were married until her passing in 1987.
John is survived by three sons, Craig Campbell, David Campbell (Ellen), and Steven Campbell, and one daughter, Angie Campbell; his grandchildren, Brittney Baskara (Achmad), Joey Campbell, Machelle Harvley (Chad) and David Bishop; two great-grandchildren, Pierce Harvley and Parker Harvley; his sisters, Frances Thackston and Mary Jane Templeton (Warren); and his brothers, Taylor Campbell (Joyce) and Cecil Campbell.
In addition to his wife Margaret, John is predeceased by his siblings, Thomas Campbell, Virginia Smith, Edwin Campbell, and Billy Campbell.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 5th, at the Chapel at The Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Dr., Greenville. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m., and a committal will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
