There are not enough words to describe the wonderful son, brother, husband, and friend that we have lost. Joel grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, was a graduate of Furman University, and was pursuing his Master of Science Degree in Business Analytics. But Joel was so much more than the degrees on his wall. Joel was a lover of science, a lover of music, and a lover of people. He spent his life helping others, lifting those up around him, even when he was in need.
Joel grew up as a Boy Scout, earning his Eagle Scout Award in 1994 and attending numerous National Scout Jamborees as both a camper and a counselor. He loved the adventure, being outside, wearing his uniform. He also had a deep love for music. In his younger years, he loved all things silly, primarily Weird Al Yankovic. His tastes changed throughout the years and his love for music deepened. At the age of 22, he decided he wanted to play the bass so he taught himself the proper technique and learned music theory. He wrote numerous songs over the years and contributed to the formation of the band Sun Brother. His love of music continued to his death. It was the way he communicated with the world.
Joel was funny. Not just silly funny, but deeply funny. He saw humor in everything and had a knack for timing. He would lift his left eyebrow at you, give you a knowing glance, and giggle. It was contagious. Joel loved nothing more than friends and family. He would give you his last dime, the shirt off his back, a room in his home. He loved the world and saw the good in everyone. His light shined so brightly, even though so many tried to put it out. He will always be remembered fondly, and we will always be heartbroken that he was taken from us so soon.
A memorial service for Joel will be held Friday, June 16, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607.
