Jimmie Ruth Thomas Hannon, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died Wednesday, May 17, 2023 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Mary Asa Goodlett Thomas Pickens and James Alfred Thomas of Atlanta, Georgia, and stepdaughter of the late Lewis Holbert Pickens of Greenville, South Carolina.
Mrs. Hannon was a graduate of Greenville High School and Furman University. She served as the credit and accounting manager of several department stores, and ended her career as an accounting manager of the Greenville division of Winn-Dixie Stores, where she met her beloved late husband, John Henry Hannon, Jr.
Mrs. Hannon served her community in many civic and cultural organizations such as the Peace Center Founders Circle, Daughters of the American Colonies, Clarice Wilson Garden Club, SC Historical Society, Greenville Women’s Club, and the Caroliniana Library. She was State Vice Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was the first woman admitted to the Poinsett Club. She was a communicant of Christ Church Greenville.
Mrs. Hannon is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Michael Bischoff of Bogart, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Jane Hannon of Columbia, SC; two sisters: Esther Pickens Jones of Nacogdoches, TX, and Marie Pickens Goodlett of Aiken, SC; three sisters-in-law: Nancy Hannon Smith of Fort Worth, TX, Martha Hannon McPhail of Greensboro, NC, and Ruth Tatterson Thomas of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren: Lillian Augusta Bischoff of Bogart, GA, John Brian Hannon of Raleigh, NC, Carolyn Hannon Newlin of Charleston, SC, John William Bracknell of Johns Creek, GA, Anna Bracknell of Greer, SC, and Elizabeth Bracknell Ryland of Richmond, VA; ten great grandchildren: Hadley, Peyton, and Braxton Newlin of Charleston, SC, Scott Hannon of Raleigh, NC, Susan Wilson Midgett of Greenville, SC, Will and Kaitlyn Bracknell of Johns Creek, GA, and Page, Audrey, and Cole Ryland of Richmond, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Victor Scott Hannon; daughter, Susan Hannon Bracknell; two brothers: Donald Frederick Thomas & Lewis Holbert Pickens; and one sister: Mary Evelyn Thomas Wootten.
Special love and recognition to her nephew and niece, David and Beth Hannon of Greer, SC; her personal assistant, Suze Couchey of Greer, SC; and her companion and best friend of many years, James Fay Gilbert of Greenville, SC.
A visitation for Mrs. Hannon will be held Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Greenville Memorial Gardens, 7784 Augusta Road, Piedmont, SC 29673. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm with a committal service to follow.
