Jerry William Costner, 75, of Taylors, S.C., passed away at Open Arms Hospice House Tuesday, April 12, 2016. The son of the late Edwin and Geneva Costner, he was born in Shelby, N.C., on Aug. 29, 1940.
In addition to his beloved wife of 56 years, Janette Fortenberry, Jerry is survived by two sons, Timothy (Janet) of Anderson and Rich (Lisa) of Greenville, six precious grandchildren, Jonathan (Krista), Dustin and Caitlin of Anderson and Jacob, Joshua and Luke of Greenville. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Lee and three nephews, Mark, Todd and Gary all of Lawndale, N.C.
He worked for Liberty Life Insurance Company for 38 years as an agent, sales manager, training assistant, district manager, Director of Manpower Development, Director of Conservation and Senior Director of Training and Conservation. He completed Part I of LUTC and CHFC. He was a longtime member of the Life Underwriters Association and the Southeastern Training Directors Association and serving as chairman on various other committees.
Before joining his beloved Mountain Creek Baptist Church and Homeward Bound SS Class, he served his previous church as Deacon, choir member and teacher/superintendent of the Young Peoples Department. He was also a Mason. Jerry enjoyed golf, playing guitar, singing and gardening. He was a member of the Piedmont Alumni Player’s Entertainment Group which he dearly loved. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had a great sense of humor and a ready smile for everyone.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2016, in the chapel of The Mackey Mortuary. Burial will follow at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the mortuary one hour prior to the service.
