James Boyce Pressly III, 36, beloved son of Jane Earle Furman Pressly and the late James Boyce Pressly, Jr., died on Sunday, December 21st, in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister Dr. Mary Earle Pressly Garrison and her husband Kevin Patrick Garrison; his nephews Henry Boyce Garrison and Andrew Earle Garrison; his grandmother Florence Coffin Pressly; and his partner Bradley Doron Kodesh. Also surviving James are many aunts, uncles, cousins and loving friends to cherish his memory. James was predeceased by this grandparents, Dr. James Boyce Pressly, Alester Garden Furman III and Mary Simms Oliphant Furman. Born in Greenville, SC, on November 4, 1978, James graduated from Clemson University in 2003 with a BA in Design. He completed two internships in Barcelona, Spain before entering the University of Virginia to complete his education. He graduated in 2007 with a Master of Architecture degree and a Certificate in American Urbanism. He was elected by his class to be the speaker at the diploma ceremony. In 2007 James won First Prize in the APC/AIAS Transportation Hub Student Design Competition which took place at the Adaptive Environments office in Boston, Massachusetts. The competition was sponsored by the American Plastics Council (APC) and administered by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS). Mr. Pressly chose to site the speculative project in Greenville. In April, 2007, James was also recognized, along with fellow Virginia graduate Allison Dryer, by the Boston School of Architecture for an Award for Design in BSA's In the Pursuit of Housing Award Program. James and Allison received this award for an exhibited housing design competition they entered for a site in New Orleans in April of 2006. After graduation, James worked in New York City on a variety of projects and then moved to Atlanta in 2012 to continue his architecture and design business. James traveled the world and was a gifted photographer and artist. He will be remembered for his deep love of friends and family, his masterful wit and unique sense of humor, his sensitive nature, his special way of viewing the world, and his amazing creativity. A memorial service for James will be held at Christ Church Episcopal, Greenville, SC on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 11:00 am with a reception following the service in the McCall Parlor.
