James “Jim” Robert Brooks, Sr., 95, of Greenville, SC, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 24, 2016. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Boiter Brooks and his brother, John Fletcher Brooks. Born in Temple, Georgia, he was the son of John Fletcher Brooks and Sarah Thomason Brooks. James attended Clemson University and graduated from Furman University, Class of 1943 and was a retired state employee and co-owner of Brooks Brothers department store (1954-1974). He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Jim was proud to serve in the US Navy. During his time, he served on the USS Mintaka and the USS Courtland, and was stationed at Newport, RI; Shoemaker, CA; Treasure Island; New Caledonia Island; Espiritu Santo Island and in Hawaii.
He is survived by three sons, James (Jim) Robert Brooks Jr. and his wife Janice of Greer, S.C., Michael Boiter Brooks and his wife Lorraine of Greer, S.C., and Christopher Lawrence Brooks and his wife Kathy of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one daughter, Nancy Brooks Weatherly and her husband Walter of Taylors, S.C.; many nieces and nephews, and seven grandchildren, Eric Michael Brooks, Justin Mattson Brooks, Jennifer Allison Brooks, Christopher Lawrence Brooks, Jr., James Thomason Brooks, Mary Caroline Rawl and her husband Thomas, and Lee Christopher Weatherly and his wife Amy; and three great-grandchildren, Sarah Anne Rawl and Ava Caroline Weatherly, and Elisabeth Elaine Weatherly.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park with a special presentation by the American Legion. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
