Born and raised in Greenville, SC, Jack was the son of the late Nell Baker and Jack A. Roddy. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, Greenville High School and Wofford College.
Upon graduation, Jack began his service with the U.S. military, earning the rank of First Lieutenant and receiving notable recognitions such as Corps of Intelligence Police Meritorious Service and U.S. Meritorious Service.
After his service, Jack pursued further professional development, completing the Penn State Executive Management Program and earning a Doctorate in Business Administration from California Western University. He had a 21 year career at Fluor Daniel and was Vice President of Savannah Economic Development Authority.
Jack was greatly involved in his community, serving on the Wofford College Board of Advisors, Council of Wofford Associates, Board of Directors for the Mental Health Association of Greenville and as President of Green Valley Country Club, He was also a member of Sans Souci Baptist Church where he loved coaching the girls basketball team and volunteering in the church nursery.
Jack’s passions extended far beyond his professional and community pursuits. An avid skier, Jack loved spending winters with his family amongst the Utah mountains. When the weather warmed up, he could be found on the golf course, sporting his handicap of two, or in the mountains of Little Snowbird riding 4-wheelers with the grandchildren. Every day with Jack was an adventure.
Jack is survived by his daughters, Tara Jackson (Watt) and Rhonda Asper (Steve); his grandchildren, Baker Jackson (Isabella), Brogan Jackson, Dalton Asper and Carson Asper; and cherished friend, Rose Moore Tomlin. Jack is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Sexton Roddy; sister, Lou Vera Saad; and his beloved dog, Peanut.
Jack will be remembered by many for his quick wit, endlessly supportive nature, larger than life personality and as “Big Jack” to his grandchildren. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel at 2:00 p.m. followed by a committal service with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, it is Jack’s wish that donations be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1839 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621 and Wofford College, 429 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
