Born in Piedmont, SC, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Alvin Thomas Smith and Ethel Marie Casey Smith.
He was a member of Piedmont United Methodist Church where he was known as the “Candy Man”. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was also a Mason and an avid woodworker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mary Bannister and Jane Smith; and a grandson, Brad Payne.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Mary B. Smith; 3 daughters, Beawayne Roberts, Patti Mann and Marion Payne; a son, J.D. Hunnicutt; 5 step-children, Ann Elmer, Rose Cox, Tina Haley, Carl Black and John Black; 26 grandchildren, Steven Hugh Payne, Keith, Scarlett, Sigrid, Ginny, Liz, Sylvia, Rhonda, Mike, Scott, Stacey, Jessica, Christine, James, Sarah, Sally, Heather, Lindsey, Erica, Paige, Jesse, Jack, Justin, Kaitlyn and Micaela; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30pm Thursday, February 18, 2016 in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
