Harry Eugene (Gene) Hunt Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, faith, and love. Born on May 11, 1939, in Birmingham, Alabama, he was the son of the late Harry E. Hunt Sr. and Peggy Messer Hunt.
Gene graduated from Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1957. Shortly after, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, South Carolina. It was there that he met the love of his life, Barbara Jo Loftis. After his military service, Gene began a long and successful career with Burroughs/Unisys Corporation, retiring as a Customer Service Manager in Customer Services Engineering. He was deeply dedicated to his work and colleagues.
Gene's heart for service extended far beyond his professional life. He was a founding member and Captain of the Duncan Chapel Fire Department, where he volunteered for 30 years. He also devoted time to youth in his community, serving as a little league assistant coach and as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America.
A man of deep faith, Gene's desire to raise his sons in a Bible-believing church led him to Overbrook Gospel Chapel. He became a faithful member and worshipped there for 57 years, serving as both treasurer and deacon. He also gave his time as a volunteer at Christian Camps, Horton Haven and Camp Hope, always seeking to make a difference in the lives of others. Gene was known for his kindness, leadership, and unwavering commitment to his family, church, and community. He served on various local committees and was respected and loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Barbara Jo Loftis; his sons, Timothy Eugene Hunt (Marla) and Stephen Edward Hunt (Catherine); and his beloved and cherished grandchildren, Stephanie, Sarah, and Samuel. He is also survived by his brother, James A. Hunt (Donna) of Warner Robins, Georgia; his sister, Katherine Colwell of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
Gene’s legacy of faith, service, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
