Genna always made my heart happy! Some of my fondest memories of living in Greenville, SC are the ones created with Genna and her family. Whether she was pulling my hair, folding and refolding my towels or hiding her father's watch in my couch, she always made me smile. I am sad that I cannot see her again in this earthly, but I'm so happy that she is pain free and in the presence of those that love her dearly. What a glorious reunion that must have been! She leaves a legacy of love and kindness that we can only hope to emulate. 'Til we meet again, my dear Genna!

Genna (and family😍) made a huge difference in our kids lives!  Thankful we all got to know Genna and Barbara and John!  A great memory was having Genna part of Josh and Tammy's wedding party!   Thank you for sharing your lives with us and for enriching so many of our lives💑

Genna was that “special child” that was most definitely Heaven sent. God in his wisdom, chose the perfect parents and family for her.  All of you have shown so much love and dedication to her over the years. 
I’ll always remember Genna’s need for having a single hair from your head. I share your grief in the loss of a very unique and lovely young lady.  May God comfort you in the difficult days ahead. 

I think the neat thing about knowing Genna was how much she loved. She cared about those of us that had the privilege to be her counselor at camp. I loved hearing her laugh when we would trip or do something that made her giggle. I loved being able to rip my own hair out and hand it to her while telling her to not break it. Then having her comfort you when you “cried” after she broke the hair. 

I’ll just miss her. She was so loved. So she will be so missed.

We traveled to Kentucky for a small gathering of army friends when Genna was just a little girl.  There we discovered, to our delight, her ideas of fun and games!  Genna slipped Dave’s wristwatch off his arm and carried it around the house and out the patio door.  I can still see her daddy’s smile as he reassured Dave it was OK, she would bring it back.  At a reception later that day we got in on her “secret” love of cookies.  After an approving  glance from her mommy,  she reached and stretched just enough to slip a cookie off the plate.  And when that was done she slyly returned for one or more!  It has always been so apparent that Barbara and John were top notch at loving and nurturing her and giving her every opportunity to succeed .
Life without Genna must seem unimaginable but we pray the comforts of family and friends and memories will soothe your pain and loss.  Our love to you, Barbara, Darien, Brennan and all the family.

Len and I are so saddened by Genna’s passing. We know how much you dedicated your life to Genna, you did your utmost for her well-being.
May your faith and the good memories bring comfort to fill that void and a smile whenever you think of her. 
I still remember how she enjoyed coming to the board meetings (and her smile picking my hair).

Below is a story I shared in an op-ed in the Greenville Journal about how my first experience with Genna changed my perspective about individuals with disabilities.  Genna's influence on me has been profound.  

I do not have a disability. Growing up, I had no exposure to people with disabilities until I volunteered with Special Olympics as a senior in high school. Later in my professional career I was hired to help raise money for a new facility for Camp Spearhead. We pulled together some families and campers to gather stories for our campaign video. Everything was going great until one of
the camper’s mother told a story that made me face some hard truths about myself. She shared a story about being in a restaurant when a waiter dropped a tray of food because he was so visually distracted by her daughter Genna’s appearance. She ended the story by saying, “the reality is people are uncomfortable around people with special needs.” When she said this I realized that I could have been that waiter. If I was really honest with myself, I was
uncomfortable with people with disabilities. As my perception of myself quickly unraveled, I realized that for my whole life, I did not see people like Genna as fully equal. Instead, I only saw their disability.  I felt like a fraud and was ready to resign because I felt ashamed. Then everything changed.  After the meeting, Genna hopped out of her chair and slowly made her way to me. I was terrified. I felt like she could see through me and would expose me for who I just then recognized I was. Instead, she reached
out and stole my nose. She then stole the nose of everyone else in the room. In that moment, I realized that everything I thought and believed about people with disabilities was wrong. When Genna stole my nose, I saw her as a person instead of a “disabled person.” I saw her as someone who wanted the same things out of life that I did – fun, connection, relationships, and meaning. I saw her as an equal.  Thank you Genna!

Genna always made me smile. She was a ray of sunshine for all of us who had the pleasure to work alongside her at Camp Spearhead. I know her family treasured her deeply and will miss her humorous antics. Heaven gained an angel, and we are all blessed to have had so much time with her on this earth. We love you, Genna, Barbara, and family. 

I remember all the times Genna would ask for a strand of my hair and then break it and tell me to cry. I also remember all the times she used to blow on my belly.  I am sorry for your loss. She will be missed.                 Love,    Sarah

I am sorry for your loss!  I have so many fond memories of Genna during our years at Washington Center.  She was a joy to teach(most of the time).I wish you strength it get through
these difficult times.

I am now living in Houston to be near my son and family. Sorry I can't make it to Genna's service.  I know it will be memorable'

I can say here what I am unable to say through my shower of tears.

Though we all shared in “GENNA ISMS”, her relationships with most people were very individual, personal, and tailored for what each person needed.  Her magic was to be able to touch the part of a person that most needed to be touched!

For me, she was my muse and my motivation … to pursue studies I had never even considered … so I could begin to understand.
Her greatest gift was teaching me about PERFECTION …what it is; how to define it; how to recognize it … and most of all how to hold it in my heart forever.

Genna was the sweetest and most beautiful person I have ever known. She reminded us all of how Jesus would want us to live and treat others. We will miss her so much, but are comforted to know that she is happy in Heaven and we will see her again soon. May God bless all of you at this time. ❤️

Genna was a beautiful loving person! Everyone loved her... she loved to be funny an loving.. she also loved getting hair from people! She was a sweet soul that won’t be forgotten! U will be missed genna! R.I.P 💗💗💗

Barbara & Genna were customers of mine when I worked at Henry's Smokehouse for 20+ years. I knew exactly what Genna wanted before she even walked into the door! Genna always put a smile on my face.  This turned into a lifelong friendship, and Genna will always have a place in my heart. I will miss her dearly

Sending our heartfelt condolences to this beautiful family, neighbors who became our family when none of ours was close. Genna was the sweetest soul who loved everyone she met and who taught my daughter how to be kind and accepting of everyone. One day she will pull our hair again. I am sure she will open the garage to heaven for us, and we’ll bring the flip books and slap bracelets.
