Frances Singleton Woodside, age 83, beloved wife of James Ellis Woodside returned home to her Eternal Father on October 6, 2021 after a period of declining health. Born in Pickens, SC on October 19, 1937, her parents were Julia Folger Singleton and Walker Giles Singleton. Survivors, in addition to her husband, are James Ellis Woodside, Jr. and his wife, Mollie, and David Walker Woodside, all of Greenville, and granddaughters, Julia Hope Woodside of Charlotte, NC, and Laura Ellis Woodside, of Greenville.
Fran graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Pickens High School in 1955 and served as Class President. She attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA and married Jim Woodside in 1958. She was a member of the Junior League of Greenville and served as President of the Greenville County Association of Parents with Learning Disabilities.
After Fran raised her family, she attended her first art classes at the Greenville County Museum of Art. She discovered a passion for art and returned to school at Converse College. She graduated from Converse with a B.F.A. in Applied Art and continued her education at the University of Georgia where she earned her M.F.A. degree in Painting & Drawing. She was Artist-in Residence with the University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy in 1989 and traveled back to Italy with Jim for 20 years to paint. Fran taught at the Greenville County Museum of Art, Converse College, and Spartanburg Technical College, and maintained an art studio in downtown Greenville for more than 30 years.
As a member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years, Fran’s most rewarding work was serving on the First Presbyterian Healing Prayer Team as an Abiding Prayer Minister.
Fran was known for her enthusiasm, hard work, creative ability as a painter, loyal friendship, intellectual ability, love of Italy, and devotion to Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior.
Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 3pm on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. The family will receive guests prior to the service at 2pm. Burial services will be private.
