Emmett was a conservationist, a respected writer, and a photographer. He received a Gold Medal in 2008 from the Florida Book Awards, as well as numerous other awards throughout his career for his wildlife photography. His knowledge of the environment, Indian history, herpetology, and wildlife was extensive. Emmett was most comfortable in the natural world, and would tolerate but a few friends.
