Born in Farmville Virginia, Colleen was proud of her Virginia roots. After finishing high school in Farmville at the age 16, Colleen attended Longwood College and after graduation moved on to nursing school at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville where she excelled in her studies. After nursing school Colleen’s brother introduced her to William Walton Rixey Jr of Richmond, VA who had graduated from Hampton Sydney College, also in Farmville. After a brief courtship they were married in February of 1952 just prior to his deployment to Korea with the United States Army.
Colleen and Bill moved to Greenville in 1978 where she was a dedicated member of Christ Church. For over 40 years Colleen was a member of the Altar Guild and was always there to do her part for her church and her Lord. Her dedication to the church was her statement, her testimony and will be her legacy. In addition to her church activities, Colleen also spent many years as a volunteer at the Greenville County Museum of Art where she loved her time spent working in the Museum store and helping with Openings and Galas.
Colleen is survived by her daughter Susan Rixey Van de Bogert and husband Jon of Orlando FL; daughter Sarah Rixey Jones and husband Steven of Greenville SC; and son William Walton Rixey III of Morehead City NC, grandsons, Scott and Brad Van de Bogert of Orlando, Sam Jones of Greenville, Gray and Jack Rixey of Morehead City, and granddaughter, Corinne Rixey Coleman of Charleston SC and husband McNair. Colleen’s grandchildren meant the world to her and she had a special relationship with each and every one of them.
The service will be held at Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville, April 9th at 3:00.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mackeycenturydrive.com for the Rixey family.
