Carol Mahon Tate of 23 Creekridge at Cascades at Verdae was called hom to her Lord and Savior on May 22, 2015 after a long illness. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, George Edwin Tate. Carol was surrounded continually by the loving care of her 4 children, 5 step-children and many grandchildren in her days of declining health. In addition, she was cared for by many exceptional caregivers through Homewatch and The Cascades.
Raised as a 3rd generation Greenvillian by her parents, Brown Mahon and Carolyn Cartwright Mahon, Carol attended public schools in Greenville, followed by St. Mary's in Raleigh, NC, and Converse College. She was first married to the late William Herschel Gowan. Her passions for her church, music, and the Greenville community are reflected in her past time activities as well as her career experiences. Her past involvement in numerous book clubs, music clubs and garden clubs as well as singing in choirs at Christ Church and with a group of Converse College singers was of great enjoyment to her. Her past participation on the Board of the Children's Museum, the board for the Foundation of St. Francis Hospital, the Land Trust Challenge Grant for Upstate Forever, and the Junior League of Greenville embodies her civic-mindedness. Carol supported George's deep love for Wofford College. In addition, she committed herself to leadership roles in social groups such as The Debutante Club of Greenville, and The Assembly. Her career began as a kindergarten teacher at Westminster Presbyterian Church, followed by serving as an event coordinator at Greenville Country Club. Additionally, she was a Title One Coordinator for the Greenville County Schools, and a volunteer Coordinator for St. Francis Hospital in Downtown Greenville.
