Billy Hugh Mason, known to friends and family as Hugh, died on January 6, 2023, after a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and Cancer. Hugh was born on December 29, 1935 in Jonesville, SC, where he was raised the only child of Guy and Nancy Ward Mason.
A proud graduate of Wofford College, he worked many years for the JP Stevens Company in the textile industry. Later in his career he was an independent auditor for the ISO 9000 manufacturer’s quality standard and was highly sought after in this field due to his knowledge, experience, and professionalism. He was respected for his ability to solve problems and he believed in doing things right the first time.
Hugh was an avid reader who read hundreds of books. He read all the classics and was constantly acquiring new titles from the bestseller list in various subjects and styles. He enjoyed following sports, especially baseball, which he had a love for since he was a boy. He was a star player for Jonesville High School and received the Most Valuable Player award his senior year. He also played American Legion ball and was the captain of his Textile League team after high school. In addition, Hugh was an ardent supporter of University of South Carolina sports as a fan and long-time booster.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 49 years, Gayle Jackson Mason, his son Mark and daughter Beth, along with 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Services will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church at 7 Shannon Drive in Greenville, where he was a faithful member, on January 10 at 2:00pm with a family visitation at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
