Alan was born November 22nd, 1953 in Jackson, Tennessee. He was the eldest of four children, and attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Over the course of these studies, he traveled to Nicaragua and met Nora Ruiz. After he graduated with a degree in architecture in 1977, they married and raised two children together.
He was passionate about his work, earning the accreditation titles AIA CSI CCS CCCA LEED AP BD+C over the course of forty years in the architectural field, spending several years as chapter president and awarded FCSI fellowship shortly before passing. He was an active part of his children’s school lives, often volunteering his time and resources to the J.L. Mann high school band booster club. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Council and scoutmaster for BSA Troop 283.
Alan was preceded in death by his father, Paul, and his mother, Ann (née Mitchell). He is survived by his wife and two children: son Alan Jr and his wife Misty, daughter Jennifer and her husband Cory, and was a proud grandfather to Austin Horne and Nelenia Renick. He is also survived by his three siblings: two brothers Paul Horne and wife Julia, James Horne and wife Susan, and sister Elizabeth Headley and husband Martin, along with several nieces and nephews.
In observance of safety precautions for COVID-19, no public funeral will be held.
