Charles was a multi-faceted man who greatly loved and cherished his family. Charles was a 1953 Graduate of Westmont High School in Hollansburg Ohio. He had many interests but only one true love, Barbara.
Charles enjoyed doing many things and this list compiled from our memories will not do him justice. He was an avid sports fan and as a young man enjoyed participating in baseball and basketball, he even played semi-pro baseball in Chicago after graduating high school. Later in life he frequently demonstrated his love for competition by playing in the Darke County Churches dartball league where many will attest to his love for the win. His love for playing sports was equal to or bettered by his desire to watch sports. One of his greatest desires was to watch the Cincinnati Reds and Ohio State Buckeyes as well as watching his grandchildren in the variety of sports that they participated in. Another favorite of Charles’ was playing croquet and you can bet there was always a certain section of yard kept in great shape for his playing surface.
Charles was a collector and spent a lifetime building a collection of all kinds of antiques and the greatest of these were his clocks. Charles who was employed by Alcoa as a mechanic developed a passion for clocks and used his professional skills to become a widely known clock repairman. As time went on he became known as “Charlie the Clock Guy” and built a wide spread reputation.
Charles was a very active member of the Beach Grove Church of the Brethren where he had served on the Church Board. Charles was instrumental in assisting his daughters and nieces when they formed the gospel singing group known as the “Bevins Cousins”.
Alongside his wife, Charles enjoyed going to local festivals and selling snow cones and soft drinks from a concession trailer that he had built. With a large family, big get togethers’ are frequent occurrences and Charles loved making homemade ice cream because as he often said “there’s always room for ice cream”.
As a farmer he raised beef cattle and also kept horses, he often offered his services as a coachman driving newlyweds away from the chapel in a surrey with a fringe on top that he restored.
Charles was many things to many people and will be greatly missed by all.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will follow in Greenmound Cemetery in New Madison. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 18, 2021, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
