Jack R. Wood, 90, of Greensburg, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2016, at the Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Greensburg. Jack was born on August 14, 1925, in Kokomo, IN, the son of Cyril and Norma (Weaver) Wood. He attended Racine High School where he was an accomplished athlete. He joined the U.S. Navy his senior year of High School and was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Patricia Ann Rafferty on June 10, 1950 in Shelbyville. They had three children together.
He graduated from I.U. Law School in Bloomington in 1956 and practiced law at the Rafferty and Wood Law Office in Shelbyville for many years.
He held office in many service organizations including Exchange Club, Elks, Red Cross board, ARC of Shelby County board, United Fund and the Shelby County Democratic Party. A highlight of his life was accompanying his mother in law to the 1960 Democratic Convention in Los Angeles. While there he met John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Peter Lawford and his idol, Frank Sinatra, among others. Later he attended the inauguration in Washington DC.
He and his wife moved to Greensburg in 2003 and became members of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughter Jacquelyn (Jay) Pratt of Greensburg, his son Matthew Wood, his granddaughter Shelley Wickizer of Columbus, IN, his sister Patty Fisher and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son Michael Wood, his brothers William Wood and Jerry Fisher and one sister Phyllis Plona.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016, from 4PM – 7PM at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 10:30AM also at the funeral home with Rev. Cliff Bunch officiating. Burial will follow at the Forest Hill cemetery in Shelbyville.
