William Wiles Potter Jr., passed away, January 8, 2015. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 N. Greene Street, Greensboro, NC 27401, with the Reverend Stewart Tabb officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at Hanes Lineberry, North Elm Chapel, 515 N. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
Dr. Potter was born July 28, 1914, in Marysville, Kansas. He was the only son of Judge William and Blanche Potter. He Graduated from Marysville Central High School where he played football and basketball. After high school, he got his medical degree from the Illinois School of Podiatry, where he made many lifelong friends. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant in the Navy and was assigned to the Marines at Camp Lejeune. After the war, he returned to Kansas where he opened his practice and met his future wife, Helen Merry. His many friends from NC convinced the young couple to move to North Carolina. He and Helen moved to Charlotte where he raised his family and practiced podiatry over 40 years. Dr. Potter was a member of the Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, the Oasis Shriners Club, the American Podiatry Association and a past president and member of the NC Podiatry Association.
He was a devoted member of the Holy Comforter Church where he served as an usher. Besides his family, his other passions were golf and his friends at Carolina Country Club where he was known as Potsie. After the death of his wife he returned to Marysville, Kansas for his 50th High School reunion. He met another widow, and later married Hazel Breeding. They were married 26 years. He enjoyed his many trips back to Kansas reacquainting with his old friends and Hazel’s family. He loved Hazel's family and became a grandfather and great grandfather. His last years were spent in Greensboro with his daughter Dr. Patricia Lynn Potter. His family would like to acknowledge all his friends for sharing their love for this wonderful man.
Dr. Potter was preceded in death by his wives Helen Merry Potter, Hazel Breeding Potter, son Robert Wiles Potter, Great Grandsons, Trevor Milner, and Mark Hunter Talbot. He is survived by his daughter Dr. Patricia Lynn Potter of Greensboro, and Hazel's three children and their families, Sharon and Bob Milner, Tom and Dixie Talbot, Curt and Bonnie Breeding, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
