Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Greensboro on Monday, December 19, 2022 with Rev. Alan Sherouse and Dr. Steve Pressley officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Atrium of the church.
Bill was born on October 21, 1923 in Mullens, WV to the late McKinley Hobart Lusk and Lucy Davis Lusk. He graduated from Mullens High School where he was the president of his class. Following graduation, Bill served our country in the United States Army with the 17th A/B Division 517th Parachute Infantry in Fort Bragg during WWII. During his time in the service, he received the Combat Infantryman- Purple Heart, Bronze Stars- Parachute Badge and Glider and three Battle Stars with Arrowhead. When he returned home from the war, Bill married Betty Garrett Williams on September 6, 1945. Bill went on to graduate from Virginia Tech with honors in 1947 and then began his 40 year career with Burlington Industries where he worked as an Area Controller.
Bill was a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years where he and Betty were active members. He served as a deacon, chairman of the finance committee and taught Sunday School for many years. After retirement, he enjoyed working on ceramics at the church.
Bill was also very active with the YMCA . He served as president of Greensboro Metro YMCA and of Greensboro Central Branch YMCA. Bill was a Life Member of the Board of Directors, Greensboro Metro YMCA.
In 1985, Bill served on The Governor's Efficiency Study Commission under Governor James Martin.
Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Betty Williams Lusk, and two sisters, Phyllis Hope Hickok and Mary Kathryne Kirkland.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Jeanne Ann Ezzell (Terry) and Mary Sue Butler (Pat); son, William Davis Lusk, Jr.; grandchildren, Ryan, Matt and Nick (Emma) Butler and Adrienne, Katherine, and Samantha Lusk as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Healthcare Staff at Friends Homes West with a special thank you to William and Kathy for their wonderful and compassionate care of Bill.
