Terry was born on July 30, 1943, in Darby, PA to the late William Joseph Kane, Sr. and Mary Gallagher Kane. He played basketball at Scranton Prep and the University of Scranton, where his basketball teammates became lifelong friends. He married the love of his life, Noreen Shea, in 1966. They would have celebrated their 58th anniversary on June 18th.
After medical school at Temple University, Terry had a distinguished and varied career. He practiced family medicine, was instrumental in launching the Family Medicine Residency Program at Duke University in the early 1970s, ran HMOs, healthcare systems, and start-up healthcare companies, and served on the faculty at Duke, in addition to other roles. Terry was always willing to try something new and put his natural leadership skills to use.
Terry loved spending time with family at his beach house in Pine Knoll Shores, golfing with friends at the Governors Club and Old Chatham Golf Club, and nurturing his love of cars. However, his favorite pastime was watching his Duke Blue Devils compete. He was happiest while in Wallace Wade or Cameron Indoor stadiums, often with friends or a grandchild or two.
Terry was most proud of his family, whom he loved dearly, and treasured his role as husband, father, and “Pops.” Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Noreen Shea Kane; children, Kristin Wohlfert (Jon) of Naples, FL; Jackie Connors (Manning) of Greensboro, NC; Kelly Bartlett (Wes) of Greensboro, NC; and William “Bill” Kane (Casey) of North Wales, PA; grandchildren, Jack (Charlotte), Collin, and Sydney Wohlfert; Austin, Kathleen, and Grant Connors; Erin, Allie, and Drew Bartlett; and Alex and Tucker Kane; and great-granddaughter, Caroline Wohlfert. He is also survived by his siblings, Connie Egan (Keith), Sherry Korody, Kim Moroze (Michael), and Chris Kane (Sue). He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Betsy Foley.
The family is thankful for the care provided by Terry’s companion, Noel Turnbull, and the nurses with Hand and Heart.
A funeral mass will be held at 11am Monday, June 3, 2024, at Saint Pius X Catholic Church in Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Durham Nativity School, 1004 N Mangum St, Durham, NC 27701.
