Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens.
A native of Stokes County, Mr. Johnson was the son of Harvey and Eva Johnson. He graduated Valedictorian from King High School in 1942 and then attended Mars Hill Junior College. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Air Corps during World War II. After the military, Mr. Johnson earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from N.C. State University in 1949. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Barnabas Sunday School Class where he served as treasurer. He was a retired engineer supervisor for Western Electric (AT&T) with 40 years of service. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club O. Henry Chapter serving as president and treasurer. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a member of I.E.E.E. He enjoyed N.C. State football and basketball and was an avid attendee of the Greensboro Symphony and the N. C. State Friends of College Classical Music Symphony.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 54 years, Elanda “Leah” Johnson, and a sister, Ruth Johnson.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his children; Kay Raxter (Hugh) of Montgomery, Alabama, Jane Stine (Kenneth) of Apex, Linda Parrott (Tim) of Greensboro, sister, Betty J. Kauffman of Winston-Salem, brother, Richard Wade Johnson of King, and grandchildren; Dana Raxter Grimstad (Barry) of Auburn, Alabama, Tracy Parrott of Charlotte, Jeff Parrott of Blowing Rock and Will Stine of Apex.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215-3220 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home N. Elm St.
