Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Gate City Baptist Church, 5250 Hilltop Road in Jamestown, with Pastor Michael Owens officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park on Hwy. 29 North.
Bill was born on July 28, 1925 in Spartanburg, SC, to the late William Sr. and Bessie McCraw Harvey. He was a member of Gate City Baptist Church and in years past served as a Deacon and Director of Homebound Ministries. Bill loved to share the love of Christ and would often visit folks in Nursing Homes and take recordings of the previous Sunday’s sermon. He served in the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway after close to thirty years of service. Bill was an avid Golfer and played whenever he found the time. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Jo Harvey; a son, Billy; a daughter, Angie; one sister; and three brothers.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Beverly Harris of Greensboro and Linda Compton and husband Wayne of Winston-Salem; sister, Christine Collins of South Carolina; grandchildren; Eric Jarvis and wife Shannon of Rural Hall, Chris Compton and wife Kim of Clemmons, and Melanie Hadzopulos and husband James of Clemmons; eight great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Peggy Harvey of Thomasville.
The family will receive friends at the church Saturday afternoon from 1:00 until 1:50 pm prior to the funeral service.
