A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 pm in the main Living Room at Friends Home West on Saturday, June 9, 2018. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service. A private committal service will take place at 3:30 pm at Westminster Gardens Cemetery that same day.
Born in Greensboro, on November 3, 1929 to the late William Coleman Harris Sr. and Annette Lindsey Wright Harris, Mr. Harris was of the Presbyterian faith. Will was a Commissioned Officer, Captain, who served in the United States Marine Corps with the First Marine Division, Korea. At a young age, his family moved to New Jersey where he attended school and graduated from Colombia High School. He later graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Textiles. He worked for several textile companies and retired from Crompton Richmond &Co. Will was a past President of the Young Men’s Bible Study and was known for making excellent coffee before the studies began. Will was also a past President of the Kiwanis Club and a bell ringer during the Christmas Holidays. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League as well as an active volunteer in numerous organizations, such as, Meals on Wheels.
In his day, he was an avid Horseman, a small boat Sailor in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey and a hiker with “Crafty’s Cruiser’s “ of the Piedmont, in the North Carolina area.
Will never knew a stranger; he was blessed with an outgoing personality and the uncanny ability to tell a great story now and then. More importantly, Will was a great Father and a principled man whose ideals were instilled in his children and grandchildren. He will be sorely missed but, we all look forward to seeing him again one day.
Will is survived by his loving companion of thirteen years, Joan Worrell; his son, William Coleman Harris III and wife, Jane-Ann Bernard Harris and their sons, William Coleman Harris IV and Bernard Anthony Harris; his daughter, Lisa Sutton Cheek and husband, Thomas Mark Cheek and her children of the late William Wesley Sutton II, Sarah Elizabeth Sutton and William Wesley Sutton III. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Ann Roder Harris.
