Born in Providence, RI, a son of the late Charles V. and Winifred (Martin) Carroll, he grew up in Fall River and lived in Maryland, Georgia, and North Carolina for several years before coming back to the area several years ago.
Mr. Carroll was a graduated of BMC Durfee High School in Fall River. He was a United States Army Veteran during World War II and was stationed in Switzerland. He later received his Bachelors Degree from Brown University in 1948, his Master’s Degree in 1950 and PhD in 1963 from Georgetown University. He later received a degree Of the Middle Temple Barrister at Law in 1980 in London, England. Mr. Carroll was a Professor of Political Science at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA from 1958 to 1962, Frostburg State University in Frostburg, MD from 1963 to 1968, Guilford College in Greensboro, NC from 1968 to 1993 and a Barrister at Law of the Middle Temple in London, England, where he had Door tenancy from the summers of 1985 to 2000. He was also published in “Natural Law and Freedom of Communication Under the Fourteenth Amendment” in the Notre Dame Lawyer in December of 1966, “The Constitution, the Supreme Court, and Religion” in the American Political Science Review in September of 1967 and together with Norman B. Smith, he wrote American Constitutional Rights: Cases, Documents and Commentary in 1991 .
Mr. Carroll is survived by his sister Nancy Carroll of Fall River and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Charles V. Carroll.
His funeral mass will be held on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 12:15pm in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church 109 West Smith St., Greensboro. Burial in Green Hill Cemetery.
