Services to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at Glenwood United Methodist Church on Thursday, October 29 at 2 PM with Reverends Chris Smith and William B. Ellison officiating. Interment will follow in Westminster Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Wednesday at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel.
Bill was the only son of the late O.T. and Ella Bumgarner Ward. He graduated from Guilford College in 1952 and thus began his lifelong legacy of service. He was a US Navy WWII veteran and served aboard the USS Antietam. For 54 years he was employed with Greensboro Loom Reed and McLeod Belting as a sales representative servicing a large territory in SC, NC and VA. Bill came to the Lord at a young age and made a written promise in his Bible in 1937 to do his best to live like Jesus Christ. He lived out his faith as an active member of Glenwood UMC for 80 years, serving on numerous boards and committees and was the beloved teacher of the Crusade Sunday School Class for 55 years. Bill’s dedication to helping others led him to join in founding Camp Guilrock and serving as the first Board of Director’s Chair. He encouraged and shared Christ as a volunteer with the Yokefellow Prison Ministry of NC and in 1991 was named Volunteer of the Year and Board Member Emeritus in 2006.
He will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 60 years, Jean Fortner Ward; his children, Stan Ward of Oak Ridge and Beth Fonorow and husband Bob of Summerfield; special cousin, Larry Bumgarner and wife Nourma of Cary; and a large extended family including nieces and nephews who gave him great joy and love.
The family is grateful to the Adult Center for Enrichment. The staff, volunteers and participants added much happiness and friendship to the last 10 years of Bill’s life. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Glenwood UMC, 1417 Glenwood Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27403, Yokefellow Prison Ministry, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or Camp Guilrock, 531 Beville Road, Reidsville, NC 27320.
