Walter D. Underwood Jr., 85, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2021. A native of Greensboro, Walter was born July 12, 1935, the son of Walter D. Underwood Sr. and Ruth Mozelle Jackson Underwood. He was the only son among four children and cherished many fond memories of a wonderful childhood.
Walter attended Greensboro High School (Grimsley) and after attending N.C. State University, he took a job with AC Corporation where he worked for 55 years in engineering design and sales in the Winston Salem and Greensboro offices. In 1959, Walter met the love of his life, Barbara Atkinson, to whom he was married for 46 years until she passed away in 2009.
Walter was an avid and capable woodworker, making much of the furniture that now resides in family members’ homes. His passion for tradition and legacy can be found in the family farm in Sanford. Walter would go down to the farm to “check on things” several times a week as he found sanctuary through the connection with the family land that meant so much to him. He was also a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro where he held positions as an usher in Rejoice and on the property committee. Walter was also a Mason and a Shriner, two organizations emblematic of his spirit of mission and joy. Walter left an impression on anyone he met with his positive outlook and his witty approach to life and relationships.
Walter is survived by two children, Janie Underwood of Jamestown and Edwin Underwood and wife, Monica, of Trinity along with four grandchildren who he adored: Luke Skertich, Olivia Skertich, Madeline Underwood, and Elizabeth Underwood. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Adkins along with many nieces and nephews. Also cherishing his memory is Catherine Lankford, a special family friend.
A private memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401. Hanes Lineberry on North Elm Street is assisting the family.
