On August 7th, 2021, Ginny was sent with love from her family to the loving arms of Jesus and her heavenly friends and family. She embodied inspiration, kindness, tolerance, mercy and love to those she cared for whether as a parent, grandparent, friend or as a nurse. She gave of all of her God given gifts to those around her.
Born in Boise, Idaho, she later moved to the Oakland and the Alameda area of the San Francisco Bay Area where she grew up. She first married an airman stationed in California before moving to North Carolina, after graduating as a diploma nurse from St Francis Memorial Hospital. Later she divorced, maintaining contact with her ex-husband Dave Highfill and then married the love of her life, Howard Way who preceded her to Heaven in 2015. Also preceding her to Heaven were her parents, Harvey and Katherine Kearns and her younger brother, Dick Kearns. She leaves behind, sisters, Carol (Larry) Turner of SC and Dottie (Lee) Lauritzen of OR; as well as a brother, Don (Carol) Kearns of CO.
The majority of her time, love and energy after her husband she gave to her son, Mike Highfill, her daughter Karen Highfill and her granddaughter, Natalie Highfill (aka "the favorite") all of Greensboro, NC. She leaves behind many close friends, nieces and nephews and their children.
As her children, we would particularly like to thank Dr Ahunna Okwubunka-Anyim of Iora Primary Care and her excellent staff in helping both Mom and our family navigate a lengthy illness. There were many special people from Palliative Care and Hospice of the Piedmont who showed our mother loving kindness and dignity over many months. We wish we could name you all: CNAs, nurses, social workers, chaplains, nurse practitioners and physicians. Most of all we would like to thank the staff and volunteers from the Hospice Home of the Piedmont in High Point, you gave our mother peace, comfort and dignity while making us welcome and a feeling of it being our home. With the comfort you gave our mother, you allowed us to have some of her smiles and laughter which is eternally precious.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the red brick mausoleum just past the white marble mausoleum on the grounds of Westminster Gardens Cemetery Friday, August 27th at 3pm. Please wear a face mask if you plan to attend. For those who cannot attend or are uncomfortable attending, know we understand and will be live streaming her funeral that day. To access the live stream, go to www.AdvantageGreensboro.com and in Mrs. Way's obituary, you will find a link to the live stream event on FaceBook which usually begins about 5 minutes before the service starts. It will still be available to view on the Advantage FaceBook page afterwards. In lieu of flowers, for those who would like to donate, please consider research for Alzheimer's, Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont or the charity of your choice.
