He graduated from Mingo High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Virgil was President and owner of Dawson Fuel Oil Co. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.
On December 27, 1941 he married the love of his life, Jessie Louise Houston Dawson, who preceded him in death on April 18, 2012. They had a beautiful marriage for 70 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lessie D. Williford, Loretha D. Smith; brothers, Irvin Dawson, William “Bill” Dawson, Doyle Dawson and a great granddaughter, Mackenzie Lynn Dawson.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Faye Luney and husband Derek of Hickory; three sons, Jerry Wayne Dawson and wife Grace of Hartwell, GA, Ronnie Dawson of High Point, Donald “Donnie” Dawson and wife Barbara of Greensboro; eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The Dawson family expresses their appreciation to Tricia Sawyer McMasters along with her team members of Heaven Sent Private Care for the love and care given to Virgil over the years.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Guilford Memorial Park conducted by Hospice Chaplain Chris Morris.
