Born in Ireland, he emigrated to the United States at age 4. He served in the U.S. Army before and during World War II (1940-45), was wounded while a member of the 1st Infantry Division in North Africa and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. After the war, he married Greensboro-native Sara Sullivan and settled in the local area where they raised two sons. Dunne retired from the U.S. Postal Service, was a Mason and a dedicated churchman, participating in Christian drama productions, as well as teaching children and adult Sunday School classes at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church until he was 99 years old.
He is survived by his sons, Paul Dunne (wife Fran) of Smyrna, TN and Jack Dunne (wife Jane) of Mint Hill, NC,, and three grandchildren, Evan, Sean and Ian. As well, Dunne was blessed with three great-grandchildren; Michael, Elizabeth and Declan
Visitation will be 1:00-2:00 PM on Saturday, July 16, at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 5120 Burlington Rd, Greensboro, NC, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Greensboro.
