Mr. Thurman North Thompson, 92, entered into the presence of his Savior on December 13, 2013 at his residence. A celebration of his life will be at 11 AM on Tuesday, December 17 at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield chapel with Pastor Dallas George officiating. Interment will be at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Thompson was born in Rock Hill, SC to the late Robert Wesley and Sara Katherine “Katie” Stone Thompson. Thurman served in the US Navy during WWII primarily stationed in the Pacific Theatre. After his service he was employed with Southern Railroad as a signal maintainer and retired in 1983. Thurman was a man of faith and has been a long time active member of New Testament Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher for twenty two years and as a church trustee. He would prepare extensively for his teachings, not just studying the Bible but researching his material to make sure he had a thorough understanding of what God wanted him to convey. He will be remembered as the “Candy Man” to many of the children at church who could depend on him for his Werther’s candies. Thurman loved fishing, gardening and watching westerns. He instilled in his children the importance of hard work and family and keeping a sense of humor through it all.
He is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Ruby Andrews Thompson; his children and their spouses, James (Zerlene) Thompson of San Antonio, TX, Pastor Ty (Lib) Thompson of Jamestown, Joli Thompson (Frank) Pegram of Greensboro, Stan (Elaine) Carter of Matthews and Gwendolyn (Nelson) Howlett of Monroe; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great and great great grandchildren; and nephew, Lee Joyce. He is preceded in death by sister, Estella Joyce and two infant sisters.
