Thomas Eugene Wagg III of Greensboro, North Carolina died at his home on Friday, April 29, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was born in Greensboro on March 15, 1937. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Eugene Wagg Jr. and Thelma Estelle Long Wagg Smothers.
A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the family will visit with friends following the service at church
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and a gift to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Anne Pritchett Wagg, whom he married on August 31, 1963 in High Point, North Carolina. He is survived by his daughters, Laura Anne Wagg Gasiorek (Stephen) and Elizabeth Moore Wagg Gray (Alexander) and his four grandchildren Matthew Thomas Gasiorek, Elliot Henry Gasiorek, Emery Lathrop Gray and Seth Wagg Gray.
Tom was a graduate of Greensboro High School, Duke University and the University of North Carolina School of Law.
He was a practicing attorney in Greensboro for more than 50 years at Carruthers & Roth, PA and most recently at Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard, LLP. He was also the Public Guardian for Guilford County for 30 years, retiring in 1999.
Throughout his life, he was active in the greater Greensboro community. He served as Senior Warden of the Vestry and on the Endowment Committee at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. He also served on the Citizens Advisory Council at the Duke Cancer Institute and was an Iron Duke for many years. He was also Chairman of the Board of the Eastern Music Festival for two terms. He helped develop the test for specialization in real estate for the North Carolina Bar. He was a lifelong Democrat.
Tom was a Renaissance man and great story teller. A lover of music, especially opera, the Boston Red Sox, golf and cycling. He was an avid reader and shared his love of reading with others. He loved visiting New York City, taking in plays and eating good food. He played the bass violin and enjoyed early morning walks on the golf course with his Labs, Goody, Suki and Mattie. Tom was a kind hearted listener and was always interested in the lives of others, whether stranger or friend.
