Susan Wine Holt

Susan was born in Greensboro, the daughter of Susannah Wimbish Wine and William Bernard Wine. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her sister, Townes Wine Banner, and by her brother William Graham Wine. She is survived by her sons William Newell Holt (Sara) and Graham Eugene Holt (Paula) and her darling granddaughter Mia James Holt, all of Greensboro; also, her nieces, Tracy Ledford, Carolyn Love, Susannah Brent and nephew Gray Wine.

Susan graduated from Walter Hines Page High School, and she attended Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She continued her education at Institut International Le Mensil in Montreux, Switzerland. While living in Europe she developed a lifelong interest in art and traveling. She loved going to museums and collecting art.

Susan’s roots go back at least ten generations in Guilford County. Her ninth great grandmother, Martha McGee Bell, was a heroine of the Revolutionary War Battle of Guilford Courthouse as a spy for the American forces. Susan must have inherited her love of adventure from this relative on her mother’s side.

Susan was sociable and enjoyed membership in many organizations. For decades she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Green Hill Art Gallery. She was a member of the Antiques and Artifacts Club, the Bookmark Book Club, the Greensboro Cotillion, the Greensboro Debutante Club, the Wednesday Literary Club, the Ubiquity Garden Club and two bridge clubs. She was also a member of Holy Trinity Church.

During her fight with cancer, Susan’s favorite things were chocolate and visiting with her granddaughter, Mia Holt, who affectionately called her “Susu”. Susu was deeply loved by her family and friends.

A service will be held at Green Hill Cemetery Saturday December 4th at 2pm. There will be a reception following the service at Susan’s house.
