Greensboro - Shirley Redlack Hill died on December 21, 2016 at Brighton Gardens of Greensboro following a long illness. She had resided in Greensboro for 11 years. She was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on November 27, 1935 and lived in Danielson, Connecticut in her early years. She moved with her family to Statesville, North Carolina, graduating from Statesville High School in 1954. She graduated from Salem College in 1958 and served on the staff of the Salem Admissions Office for several years following graduation. She loved all things Salem.
She married her husband of 55 years, William Watkins Hill, in 1961 in Statesville, and lived in multiple locations along the East Coast from Florida to New Jersey, during her husband’s career with the former Bell Telephone System (AT&T). In addition to raising three children and her extensive volunteer work, she was active in Bible study, quilting, knitting, antique groups, and all things artistic wherever she lived. Her family often said she never met a stranger. She loved reading and served for a time as a library aide. Following her husband’s retirement in Atlanta, they moved to Greensboro to be near their daughter and her family. They traveled extensively throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States and were active in Elderhostel (Road Scholar) programs.
Shirley is survived by her husband and their three children: William Kimball Hill of Asheboro, Margaret Hill Sisk (Bernie), of Greensboro, and Edward Watkins Hill, of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Aaron and Hannah Sisk of Greensboro, and Logan and Rachel Hill of Georgia.
She was predeceased by her parents, Theodore (Ted) Redlack, and Ruth Redlack, of Statesville, and her brother, Kimball Redlack. Her sister-in-law, Dottie Redlack, and nephews, Robert, Thomas, and Christopher Redlack all of Maryland, survive, as does her brother-in-law Edward Hill (Margaret) of Conyers, Georgia.
A Eucharistic Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held in the chapel of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2105 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC, 27403 at 10 am on Thursday, December 29. The family will receive friends after the service in the church parish hall. Interment will be in the St. Andrews Memorial Garden.
The family thanks the staff, volunteers, and friends at Brighton Gardens Memory Care, Greensboro, and Hospice Care of the Piedmont for their loving care and support of Shirley.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Salem College, Alzheimer’s Association, St. Andrew’s Endowment Fund, or a charity of choice.
